JPMorgan internships are a great way for students to get their foot in the door at one of the world’s leading retail, corporate, and investment banks. With more than 25 different programs, JPMorgan has internship options for virtually any interest within the world of financial services. Landing an internship at this firm can be difficult, though — in 2021, JPMorgan only had around 400 investment banking internship positions available but received nearly 50,000 applications.
In this guide, we’ll go over the types of programs this financial giant offers and give you some tips on how to successfully get an internship with JPMorgan.
What Is an Internship at JPMorgan?
An internship at JPMorgan is an opportunity for students to explore career options, expand their professional networks, and, in many cases, start a path to a lucrative career in financial services. JPMorgan offers a wide variety of internships in everything from software engineering to human resources to investment banking. Even within an internship, students have opportunities to specialize and pursue specific interests and skills.
During their internship, students work with mentors who help them explore their talents, meet new people, and build in-demand skills. Additionally, interns at JPMorgan participate in events and sessions that allow them to network with colleagues, business leaders, and senior executives. Many interns also receive offers of full-time employment after finishing their programs.
Overall, interns on Glassdoor give JPMorgan a 4.4 out of 5, with 93% saying they’d recommend working at JPMorgan to a friend. Many reviews note that the pay and exposure during their internship programs were great, but the hours and bureaucracy were frustrating at times.
Who Is Eligible for JPMorgan Internships?
The general eligibility criteria for most JPMorgan internships are:
- Authorized to work in the U.S.
- Minimum preferred GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale
- Pursuing a bachelor’s or 5th-year master’s degree
- Graduating in the winter or spring following the program end date (i.e., for summer 2024 interns, they should be graduating in December 2024, or spring 2025)
- Relevant coursework
Certain internships are only for those in undergraduate programs, while others are exclusive to graduate students. Additionally, some programs may require more relevant coursework and experience than others. For example, you need to be able to code in at least one programming language to qualify for JPMorgan’s Software Engineering program, but for some finance-focused programs, you may not need specific experience in financial modeling or economic analysis.

Applying for Internships at JPMorgan
When applying for internships and student programs at JPMorgan, there are at least two steps you need to go through before you reach an interview: submitting your application and completing pre-interview tasks.
Submit Your Application
Make sure your application includes all required materials, such as a cover letter, resume, or list of references. Additionally, you may be asked to choose a preferred location or team on your application. Remember that some locations will be more competitive than others — by choosing a “less desirable” location, you may improve your chances of success. For example, fewer applicants might choose Columbus, Ohio compared to New York City, so the competition for spots in Columbus may not be as fierce.
Students can only apply to three programs each year, so make sure you choose your programs carefully!

If you’re applying for a technical internship, like software engineering, you’ll likely be given a test or challenge to complete, too. Tips for Landing a JPMorgan Internship
Do Your Research
Before and during the application process for a JPMorgan internship, you’ll need to do some research. Before applying, look at each role carefully and assess your strengths. Since you can only apply for three roles each year, it’s important to only apply for roles you have a strong interest in and ones that you have a good chance of landing.
During the process, stay up-to-date on the firm’s activities and changes in the market and industry as a whole. You may be asked timely questions throughout your interviews, like a recent M&A deal you admire or an IPO you find interesting. Additionally, researching the history and culture of JPMorgan can help you answer questions about why you want to work there.
Enlist Your Friends and Family for Help
Your friends and family can be a great resource for reviewing application materials, providing support, and practicing interviews. They can provide you with feedback about your cover letter, resume, and interview question responses. Additionally, the more you practice talking through your responses, the more comfortably and confidently you’ll be able to recite them during the real interview.
Upskill Yourself and Your Resume
You need the right skills to land a job or internship. School courses, bootcamps, and virtual job simulations can be great ways to improve your skills. Taking the initiative to build your foundational skills also looks great on resumes and can help your application stand out.
Check out JPMorgan’s job simulations on Forage.
Grow Your Network
Unfortunately, applications are not reviewed in a bubble — who you know does matter. Networking with campus recruiters, talent acquisition leaders, and company employees you have a connection to (like the same college) can greatly improve your chances of landing an internship. You can reach out via LinkedIn or by attending in-person and virtual events. Remember to be professional, friendly, and show your passion for the company.
>>MORE: Learn the ins and outs of virtual networking.
Ask the Interviewer Questions
During your interviews, don’t forget to ask the interviewer questions. When you ask questions, you show how engaged and excited about the company you are. Additionally, it can make you more memorable! With the right questions, you can begin to form a personal connection with the interviewer and improve your chances of making it through to the next step.
